How to evaluate SBA lending software

Short answer

Evaluate SBA lending software on six things the vendor should be able to show on a real file: which programs it names and handles, whether E-Tran is a submission with the loan number written back or an export, which SBA forms it populates by number, which eligibility tests run as steps, whether the loan survives closing into 1502 reporting and secondary market accounting, and which lenders your size are running it. Most vendors publish some of those and none publish all six.

The demos in this category all look the same because the borrower portal and the document checklist are the easy part. The differences show up in the file that does not fit: the 504 project with a CDC on the other side, the acquisition with four affiliates and a seller note, the loan whose guaranteed portion was sold and prepaid in the same month. This guide sets out the questions in the order a lender should ask them, with what each vendor on this site has actually published as the baseline for the conversation.

Start with the program mix

A 7(a) file and a 504 file are different workflows. In 7(a) the lender holds the whole loan, runs eligibility under delegated authority if it has it, submits the guaranty request to E-Tran and reports monthly on the 1502. In 504 the lender makes a first lien loan and a Certified Development Company makes a second, SBA-guaranteed debenture loan, with the CDC doing most of the SBA paperwork and the lender coordinating. A product built for one is not automatically built for the other.

The published record is narrower than the market's vocabulary. On the vendors covered here, Biz2X names 7(a), 504, Express, Microloans and CAPLines; Cync names 7(a) and 504; Lenders Cooperative's Ventures platform names 504, 7(a) and Community Advantage; Aloan names 7(a), 504 and Express for underwriting. Baker Hill names 7(a) with PLP, Express and CapLine. nCino names 7(a) and Express. Abrigo names 7(a). SPARK names nothing. Get your program list matched to the vendor's in writing before the demo, because every gap after that is a workaround.

  • Which programs does the vendor name on its own SBA page, and which does it handle that it does not name
  • For 504: can the lender's first lien and the CDC's debenture be tracked as one project
  • For Express: is delegated processing a distinct workflow with its own authorization form
  • For CAPLines: can a revolving structure be originated and monitored, or only a term loan

Ask what changed for SOP 50 10 8, and again for 8.1

SOP 50 10 8 applies to loans that received an SBA loan number on or after June 1, 2025, and it was a substantial revision. Per NAGGL and Doeren Mayhew it restored 7(a) underwriting criteria, reinstated the SBA Franchise Directory, ended the do-what-you-do approach, required lenders with PLP delegated authority to process every loan under it other than a refinance of their own debt and certain International Trade loans, and cut the 7(a) small loan ceiling from $500,000 to $350,000. The technical-updates version SBA released on May 29, 2025 is the one that took effect on June 1, 2025, and it added the requirement to enter 100% of direct and indirect ownership into E-Tran and a CAIVRS check on every applicant.

SOP 50 10 8.1, published August 14, 2026 and reissued with technical updates on September 25, 2026, applies to applications SBA receives on or after October 1, 2026. Per SBA's issuing notices and NAGGL's summaries it moves change of ownership into a new Appendix 15 with four deal categories and a Quality of Earnings report on larger acquisitions, retires the SBSS score on 7(a) Small loans in favor of a credit analysis, lets lenders refinance their own debt under delegated authority, which reverses the version 8 routing of same-institution refinances outside delegated processing, requires a trust that owns 20% or more to guarantee with the trustor signing personally, lets an SBA Express loan be reissued before amortization begins, allows SOFR and Treasury base rates on loans sold in the secondary market, and folds in the March 1, 2026 citizenship and residency rule that bars lawful permanent residents from any ownership. The primer on what changes in an SBA file on this site sets out the full list.

Every vendor here claims SOP compliance in some form. The evaluation question is concrete: what changed in the product for version 8, when did it ship, what shipped for 8.1 before October 1, 2026, and where does the same-institution refinance now route. A vendor that answers with a release date and a changelog has a process. One that answers with the word compliance does not. Ask a reference lender the same question and compare the two answers.

  • The release note for 8.1, dated before October 1, 2026, and what it changed
  • Where the ownership table with citizenship and residence lives, and how the six-month lookback is recorded
  • How a change of ownership is classified into Appendix 15's categories and when the product asks for a Quality of Earnings report
  • What the 7(a) Small loan path produces now that the SBSS score is retired
  • Whether a same-institution refinance can be processed under delegated authority in the product

Make E-Tran a round trip in the demo

Ask the vendor to submit a guaranty request from the product to E-Tran's test environment and show the SBA loan number landing back in the file. Baker Hill's SBA sheet describes exactly that, the loan number and application number returned from E-Tran and stored. nCino describes automated mapping and data translation into SBA's format. Abrigo describes integration through its API network. Cync describes submission automation with approval status monitoring. Those are four different claims and a demo settles which is a submission and which is an export.

Then ask which forms come out populated. Forms 1919 and 1920 are the minimum a 7(a) lender needs; Cync also names 1244, nCino names the Loan Authorization forms and IRS 4506-C through DocuSign. A form the product fills from data already in the file is the point. A blank PDF in a document library is a filing cabinet.

Decide who does the analysis

Most SBA origination systems move documents and leave the underwriting to the analyst's spreadsheet or to another tool. Baker Hill's sheet says spreads, cash flow and the memo are generated in NextGen; Abrigo and nCino lean on their wider platforms; SPARK and Biz2X describe eligibility rather than analysis. Aloan describes only the analysis: spreading related entities, tracing K-1s across affiliates, mapping guarantors and assembling a source-traceable memo, and it does not submit anything to SBA.

The question for the buyer is whether the underwriting is part of this purchase or a second one. If it is a second one, the hand-off between the two products is the thing to demonstrate: a file prepared in the analysis system arriving in the system of record with the numbers intact. The underwriting page on this site ranks vendors on the analysis alone.

Follow the loan past closing

A 7(a) lender files Form 1502 monthly with the Fiscal and Transfer Agent, due the third calendar day of the month or the next business day, with a two-business-day grace period before the final due date. Since September 1, 2025 that filing goes through the 1502 Reporting Module in the MySBA Loan Portal, which validates up front and returns errors. A lender that has sold the guaranteed portion also reports prepayments and late payments on the sold loan and remits the guaranteed share of payments on time or pays a late remittance penalty.

Ask each origination vendor where the loan lives after closing. On this site only PCFS Solutions, Lenders Cooperative, Cync and DownHome publish 1502 preparation. nCino, Abrigo, Baker Hill, SPARK and Biz2X do not describe it, whatever an AI assistant told you. If you service your own portfolio, the answer may be a second system, and the servicing page here compares the candidates. Ask the servicing vendor to produce a month-end 1502 in the current module's format during the demo and upload it; the validation errors are the evaluation.

Check the references against your size

Named lenders exist for most vendors here. SPARK names The Bancorp, Bank of Idaho and NDC's Grow America Fund, with American Bank & Trust added by CCG Catalyst. nCino names WaFd Bank, PeoplesBank, Coastal States Bank and Recognise Bank. Abrigo names Signature Bank of Georgia and Western States Bank and claims more than 400 credit union customers. Biz2X's case studies name BayFirst, which announced its exit from SBA 7(a) lending in September 2025, First Savings Bank and Newity. Lenders Cooperative names SECU MD and eight CDC and CDFI clients. PCFS's named clients, Meadows Bank and American Business Lending, come from CCG Catalyst rather than its own site. Aloan names three customers on its own site but none as an SBA reference; Numerated, Cync and Jack Henry name no SBA customer.

Ask for a reference within a factor of two of your asset size that has been through an SOP change and a 1502 rejection with the vendor. Those two events tell you more about the relationship than any demo.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single most important question to ask an SBA software vendor?

Whether E-Tran is a submission from the product with the loan number written back, or an export someone uploads. Everything else about re-keying follows from that answer.

Should a 504 lender use the same software as a 7(a) lender?

Only if the vendor names 504 and can show a project with a CDC debenture tracked alongside the lender's first lien. On this site Biz2X, Cync, Lenders Cooperative and Aloan name 504; the others do not.

How do I know a vendor keeps up with the SOP?

Ask what changed in the product for SOP 50 10 8 and again for SOP 50 10 8.1, in effect for applications received on or after October 1, 2026, and when each shipped, then ask a reference the same question. Two editions since 2025, each reissued with technical updates before taking effect, leave a recent record to check.

Do I need a separate servicing system?

If you service your own 7(a) portfolio and your origination vendor does not publish 1502 reporting, yes. Of the origination vendors here only Lenders Cooperative, Cync and PCFS Solutions publish it; SPARK, Biz2X, nCino, Abrigo, Baker Hill, Numerated and Jack Henry do not.
